“Lukas!”

You slammed into the door with your shoulder, too distressed to do anything as time consuming as using the handle. The door flew open and you squinted at the sudden light, panting from your mad dash. With a growl, you rubbed your eyes with the heels of your hands. When the light was no longer so blinding, you could see Lukas standing there, staring at you. His dark eyes glittered with the light of the fire, and for a moment you just stood still, your mind having gone blank.

“You were at the thing.”

You blinked as his words jolted you out of your daze. The reasons for your desperate run had returned to mind. Among them were certain…emotions. You forced these to the back of your mind.

“Tomorrow.”

“What?”

“Tomorrow,” you repeated. “They’re planning to murder Mathias. And then they’re coming after you.”

There was silence for a moment. Then Lukas turned, pulling two chairs over from by the table. He sat in one, gesturing to the other.

“Tell me everything.”

You plopped yourself down in one, squeezing your eyes tightly shut as you tried to remember all that you had heard in the tavern. For a moment, you could smell the ale again and feel your heart pounding in your chest.

“Ragi, Kollsvein, Gunnarr. Hoskuld.” You frowned. “There was another, but I don’t remember his name. They mentioned hurting Ull and Emil.” Your chest suddenly tightened. Emil was still down at the thingstead. Your eyes widened, and you made to stand up, but Lukas had grabbed your wrist. He gently pulled you back down.

“How did you learn all this?”

He was still holding your wrist. Why was he still holding your wrist? You closed your eyes again. Focus, focus, focus! “I overheard them. At the tavern.”

Lukas raised an eyebrow. “Why were you at the tavern?”

“To drink, obviously.”

The other eyebrow went up. Your ears started to burn.

“That was a joke.” Stupid, stupid, stupid! You were making jokes. The panic must’ve been making you hysterical. You looked down, not quite able to hold his gaze, and noticed how close the two of you were sitting. Close enough that your knees touched. You felt your body begin to tingle. Especially your knees.

When you had regained control of your scattering thoughts, you looked up. Lukas was still staring at you, his eyebrows still raised. Blowing the air out of your cheeks, you rested your head in your hands, looking at the floor instead.

“I…ran, and that was where I ended up.”

“You ran…to the tavern.” His voice was as flat as ever. For some reason, you almost smiled.

“Not on purpose.”

“Mm.”

The room went silent again, except for the irritatingly cheerful crackling of the fire and the keening of the wind outside. You were suddenly aware of how warm it was. And how dry your mouth was. And hard your heart was beating. Perhaps he can hear it.

“Why did you come back?”

The question caught you off guard, and you jerked your head up in surprise. Lukas was leaning forward, and you flinched back reflexively. Taking a deep breath, you blinked and looked away again.

“Because they wanted to kill you.” Your voice shook, and you almost growled out loud in irritation. Swallowing, you forced some more steel into it. “I won’t let that happen.”

There was a small chuckle, and you whipped your gaze back to Lukas, glaring, although inwardly you were shocked that the Jarl was even capable of laughing. It was a strange sound, coming from him. Again, a smile threatened, and again, you forced it down, still scowling at him.

His gaze met yours, and the room became silent again. Your thoughts returned to Emil, and the glare faded. You hoped that he was still with the crowd. Your eyes closed, and an image of him the night he had been attacked flashed through your mind. He had recovered quickly, but you suspected that he was frailer than he let on. You frowned with worry for the little Viking.

Warmth on the sides of your face brought you out of your thoughts. Your eyes opened, and suddenly Lukas was right there. All you could see were his dark, dull blue eyes that shone with firelight. And then something soft pressed against your lips, and a wave of heat coursed through your body, right down to your toes.

He was kissing you.

Lukas was. Kissing you.

You froze, your eyes wide. Your heart was beating faster than if you had just run a dozen leagues, and you felt as though your entire body was on fire.

“Lukas? _______?”

The two of you jerked apart. Emil was standing just inside the doorway, his violet eyes wide. Lukas’s hands quickly released your face. You turned your head away, looking at the floor, the wall, Emil’s boots, anywhere but him. For a few seconds, there was nothing but silence. Even the wind seemed to stop its howling.

“Uh…” Emil’s cheeks were bright red. Relief eased some of your embarrassment. At least he was safe.

Next to you, Lukas stood up. You glanced over at him as he strode to the table and grabbed his sword.

“I’m going to go find Mathias.” The words were abrupt.

“What’s going on?” Emil demanded. You stood up as well, feeling for your dagger, attached to your belt.

Lukas paused before replying. “The people who hurt you are planning their next move.” He was already at the door.

“Then I want to help.” The anger was clear in Emil’s voice. Lukas glanced over at him.

“You’ll help the most by staying here.”

Emil crossed his arms. “That’s not what I meant.”

“I know.” Lukas turned to the door.

“Lukas—“

“Just stay here.” He looked over his shoulder. “Both of you. Please.” With that, he slipped outside, closing the door behind him.

Emil was left scowling at the door. You, however, had gone over to the fire, using the edge of your cloak to cover your hand as you gingerly slid a tray out of the fire. Upon it sat the pile of dough from earlier, now transformed into a hot, if burned, loaf of bread. Wrapping the food in your cloak, you walked back over to where Emil stood, and he glanced over at you.

“What are you doing?” He asked.

“Something useful,” you replied, wincing as the bread’s heat soaked through your cloak to burn your fingers.

“Like what?”

“Getting a little more information.”

“Can I come?”

You sighed. “I can’t stop you.”

“My brother wants us to stay safe.”

“I know.” You paused. “But I want to help him.”

“Is what you’re planning stupid?”

You finally cracked a smile. “Not as stupid as some of the things I’ve done."

He opened the door for you, and then slid out after you, closing it carefully behind him. “What are you planning, anyway?”

You took a deep breath. “We’re going to question Torleik.”
